How to Maintain Your Colored Hair and Get Rid of Brassy Hair

For over a year now, I have embraced ash blonde hair. I've gone through three different shades so far. Each shade lighter than the previous, more expensive, and required more maintenance.

I am a firm believer in spending the time and money to maintain the hair that I paid $250+ to get done. The truth is, other than dishing out the money to spend on high quality hair products, it takes an extra 5-10 minutes in your hair care routine to maintain your hair color and/or get rid of brassy hair. The key to getting rid of brassy hair is picking the right purple shampoo.

Hair Care Routine

I often get asked how I protect, care, and maintain my soft and silky ash blonde hair. My hair care routine only involves 3 products (4 at the most).

Purple Shampoo

Bye bye brassy hair!
Fanola No Yellow Shampoo
Fanola No Yellow Shampoo: Retail $79.99 (jumbo size, 1000 ml)
TIP: You can often find it on sale for $59.99, or $21-$55 on Amazon (beware of counterfeit products!)

Fanola's No Yellow Shampoo is the best purple shampoo in the market. My stylist highly recommends it and it's been gaining more popularity in the last year or so. Unlike most purple shampoos at the store, Fanola's No Yellow Shampoo is a darker purple shampoo. This means more purple pigment in the shampoo, which will help prevent and get rid of brassy hair. It is quite expensive, but a jumbo sized bottle will last you a whole year!

I lather it onto dyed parts my hair for a total of 5 minutes, focusing on the ends of my hair where I want my hair to be the most silver.

For days where I want my hair to appear even ashier, I will spend a total of 10 minutes lathering purple shampoo. But here's the catch -- lather, rinse and repeat! Some people will spend 10 minutes lathering the same application of the shampoo. If you do that, you will not be reaping the maximum benefits of a 10 minute lather. Have you noticed that the purple shampoo will eventually fade from a dark purple to a white foam/lather? That's because the purple pigments in the shampoo have already deposited into your hair. If you keep lathering that white foam, there will be no more purple pigments left to be deposited into your hair. Instead, lather for 5 minutes, rinse, and repeat! I know some people who will apply purple shampoo to their hair while still dry. I don't recommend this because it really dries out your hair -- even more than it already does.

Shampoo & Conditioner

Redken All Soft Shampoo and Conditioner
Redken All Soft Shampoo: Retail $29 (jumbo size, 33.8 oz)
Redken All Soft Conditioner: Retail $32 (jumbo size, 33.8 oz)
TIP: Ulta has a Jumbo Sale for hair products twice a year (summer and winter). You can score each of these two products in jumbo sizes for $15-$17

Redken's All Soft Shampoo & Conditioner is by far my favorite shampoo and conditioner set. It really does what it claims -- it softens your hair! For those with colored hair, I would strongly recommend a salon-quality or high end shampoo and conditioner. They have higher quality ingredients, which will help your color-treated hair.

Leave-In Treatment

If your hair needs a little something extra, try using Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Tri-Wheat Leave In Conditioner. It will give your hair the little extra TLC it needs: a little shine and a little more softness.
